Seminary Park

The Seminary Park is the correct name of the park, however due to the large number of iguanas that live here is known by the name of the Park of Iguanas Guayaquil.

Iguana Park Description

Also known as Bolívar Park and today as Las Iguanas Park, Seminario Park -which should always have been the Plaza Mayor- is in fact the oldest and one of the most traditional in Guayaquil. A must if you visit Guayaquil.

Information about Iguana Park

  • Parque de las iguanas direction Chimborazo Avenue and Clemente Ballén Street, in Rocafuerte Parish, Guayaquil Capital, Guayas Province.
  • The site has its natural charm with trees and an artificial lagoon in which colorful fish swim.
  • The central monument is that of Simon Bolivar riding a horse, brought from Italy.
  • In addition, in the southeast corner there is a sculpture depicting two wild boars fighting, by the French sculptor Chaudejeaug; and
  • The famous octagonal wrought-iron "Glorieta", cast in the Van Dosme workshops in France in 1882, in Mozarabic style, adorned with allegorical filigrees, crowned at the top by an iron ornamentation that tops the red central dome.
  • It is in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Guayaquil, which has its beautiful semi-gothic style towers, is one of the most visited in the city. It was the second temple and first ecclesiastical parish of Guayaquil, is the Main Church, in the years of 1541 and 1542, time in which consolidates the foundation of the city, the captain Diego de Urbina. Reliable data locate it for 1590 on the hill Santa Ana, next to the House of the Cabildo and the Plaza de Armas.

Seminary Iguanas Park

Why is it called Iguana Park?

    It is known by this name the park Seminary Guayaquil, because in its well ornate gardens, live dozens of iguanas that become a unique attraction for tourists who say they give a prehistoric and natural vision to the park.

    The reptiles, of the species called green iguana, known as the "Guayaquil iguana", which measure up to one meter long, walk with tranquility and their behavior is friendly.

Seminary Park History

  • In the nineteenth century in 1868 was built the current park, had on the floor an immense eight-pointed star, so it was called Plaza de la Estrella.
  • In 1889, the Equestrian Monument to Simón Bolívar was erected and the site was renamed Plaza Bolívar.
  • By then, the philanthropist Manuel Seminario made an important donation to renovate the park, which took the surname of this illustrious citizen.
