From January to April, Puerto Cayo welcomes visitors in search of sun, sand and nightlife; there are frequent festivities throughout January, and the city is a good place to spend Carnival and Holy Week. Ecuadorians and international tourists go to Puerto Cayo from June to September for whale watching. Puerto Cayo is very quiet outside of July and August, the peak of the whale watching season.

Ecuador's only coastal national park is located south of Puerto Cayo. The national park was created in 1979. It consists of 50 kilometers of beach, 40,000 hectares of tropical dry forest and cloud forest, and 20,000 hectares of sea, including the offshore islands, which include Isla de la Plata. Machalilla National Park has a unique landscape, with bottle-shaped trees, and the leguminous carob tree, a green bark tree, which performs photosynthesis, even though it has no leaves. There are also fig trees and ceibo trees, and thorny cacti. The park is also home to more than 200 species of birds, and it is possible to see animals such as lizards and anteaters. Machalilla National Park also has several archeological sites.
