      Malecon Foundation 2000

The Malecón 2000 Foundation was created in January 1997 with the purpose of being the entity responsible for designing, executing and administering the Malecón 2000 project. It is a private law entity made up of the most representative public and private institutions in the city and presided over by the city's first representative. From its creation until the year 2000, it would be presided over by the then Mayor Eng. León Febres-Cordero; from that year to the present, it is headed by the Mayor, Ab. Jaime Nebot Saadi.

Malecon 2000 History

    • Its history dates back to before 1820, when it was called Calle de la Orilla. By 1845 it was a mile and a half long with wooden slatted seats and cast iron lamps to illuminate it. In 1906 the Cabildo built its retaining wall, between the Las Peñas neighborhood and Colón Street, where the missing market on the shore was located.
    • Traditionally, it was the first image of the city to travelers arriving by boat, since at that time the waterway was the major route of greater communication. Initially, the area between Aguirre and Junín streets was called Paseo de las Colonias Extranjeras (Promenade of Foreign Colonies), thanks to a 1931 Municipal Ordinance. Later its name changed to Simón Bolívar Malecón.
    • From 1999, during the period of engineer León Febres Cordero, the municipality of Guayaquil undertook the urban regeneration and in 2000, in the mayor's office of lawyer Jaime Nebot, the work was completed, which transformed the image of the city turning it into a tourist icon.
    • Known as Malecón 2000, it is one of the most successful urban projects in the Americas, considered a model worldwide and declared "healthy public space" by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
