Tourist Places of the Ecuadorian East

Find out about the tourist places of the Amazon of Ecuador that is divided into 6 provinces which makes it a very diverse and extensive region. Here we show you the characteristics of the Amazon region.

What places to visit in the Ecuadorian East?

Also known as Tourist Places of the Ecuadorian Amazon, let's start by naming each of the provinces that compose it:  

Sucumbíos

  • Lago Agrio: The abundance of a paradise in the Amazon awaits you in Nueva Loja, its biodiversity will dazzle your senses.       
  • Cascales: You will find pure biodiversity. Great variety of plant and animal species for a theater like no other.      
  • Gonzalo Pizarro:The territory that sleeps with the snoring of a colossus and yet is always calm.      
  • Cofán Bermejo Ecological Reserve: In the area there have been 53 species of mammals, 144 birds, 92 amphibians and reptiles and 93 of fish.       
  • Cuyabeno Faunal Production Reserve: The protected area takes its name from the Cuyabeno River, which in its middle course overflows causing a complex of 14 lagoons and forming the largest wetland in the Ecuadorian Amazon.        
  • Limoncocha Biological Reserve Its abundant fauna and flora has called the interest of scientists and tourists. In 1998 100% of the area was declared a Ramsar Wetland.       
  • Limoncocha Pier: It is located in the province of Sucumbíos, in the Shushufindi canton, Limoncocha parish at an altitude of 228 meters above sea level, with a temperature of 25 º C, becoming an ideal tropical wet place for habitat of all kinds of wildlife.       
  • Puerto La Flora: It is easily accessible and has a great diversity of flora and fauna.       
  • Malecón General Farfán: Pier of the San Miguel River.
  • Bellavista Viewpoint It has a very beautiful view, nice place to sit down and observe peacefully all the vegetation that embraces the parish territory.      
  • Julianita Orquideario: If you love to know orchids and bromeliads, don't wait any longer, Julianita Orchid offers you this in many varieties.      
  • El Bolsillo and Laguna del Encanto: It is a suitable place for those who like extreme tourism, since it is a distant place but very wonderful, then we tell you some of it.      

Orellana 

  • Taracoa Lagoon: A unique lagoon due to the landscape and biological conditions, its water in good condition, on this site you can enjoy the song of birds.    
  • Napo River: It is a long river that runs through the Amazonian territories of Ecuador and Peru. Boat trips are made here, where nature reveals its splendor.       
  • La Belleza Waterfall: It has a natural landscape, in which the waterfall is combined with the vegetation environment.    
  • CICAME Museum: The Museum of the Center for Cultural Research of the Ecuadorian Amazon, is an archaeological and ethnographic museum.      
  • Añango Lagoon: it is known for its attractive natural environment. From the Quichua community of Añango there is a path that leads to the lagoon.       
  • Laguna del Carmen: The lagoon is located at Km 21 via Auca, El Carmen Community, El Dorado Parish, has an approximate 200 meters of water mirror and an average depth of 4 meters. The lagoon is home to many wildlife, herons, hoazines, cormorants, fish, alligators, among others.           
  • Archaeological Museum Cultural Center Orellana: This Cultural Center allows to explain the historical memory of the sector, allows us to understand the present by knowing the past.    
  • Yasuni National Park: Within the park live the Tagaeri and Taromenane, Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation. To protect them and the biodiversity of the Yasuni  the Tagaeri-Taromenane Intangible Zone was created in 1999. The Yasuni National Park, Intangible Zone and adjacent Waorani territory was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1989.                  
  • Labyrinth Caverns of the Wami: It is a family business who discovered the caverns and gave it this name of Labyrinth of Wami, because it is presumed that this is where the Wami cacique walked, a reference character of the Ecuadorian Amazon.        
  • Carachupa Packcha:The Community Tourist Center "Carachupa Pakcha" awaits you in its facilities for your fun, relaxation and attention, quality and warmth.     

Napo

  • Santa Catalina Complex: Papallacta is a peaceful and peaceful place, the landscape here is perfect, especially when you notice how the high mountains cover the entire valley with moorland vegetation.       
  • Papallacta Lacustrine System: The water comes mainly from the melting of the Cayambe, Sarahurco, and many springs of the surrounding moors.         
  • El Duende Waterfall: The delicious song of the birds and their colorful plumage makes the visitor feel in a paradise, full of tranquility, this beautiful game of waterfalls is surrounded by vegetation of the area, giving it a unique and spectacular setting.      
  • Petroglyphs of Linares: The petroglyph is located in the parish of Linares, El Chaco Canton, province of Napo, cauchillo bridge sector, 100 meters away from the main road that joins the Cantonal capital of El Chaco with the parish of Linares. The petroglyphs is located on the banks of the river of the same name, 15 minutes of walking distance along the Cauchillo River.             
  • Quijos: Hot springs, beautiful moors and the jungle at your feet, adventure and rest.      
  • El Chaco: The place that sows yucca and plantain in its path and always returns to its small piece of land.      
  • Archidona: An ancient town where its customs, legends and traditions endure over time and in the identity of its inhabitants.      
  • Tena: It is an important administrative, economic, financial and commercial center of the Amazon. The main activities of the city are commerce, agriculture, and tourism.       

Pastaza

  • San Juan de Piatúa This community is inhabited by indigenous people of the Kichwa ethnic group, made up of 10 families who share their daily experiences in each of the activities they do, the minga is a symbol of brotherhood, union and coexistence, legacy of the Andean worldview.      
  • Santa Clara: "A natural destination to discover". It was named that way since its first inhabitants were devotees of the virgin of Santa Clara de Asís.        
  • Natural Padua River Spa: It is a fantastic place with very rich flora and fauna, here you can enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Piatua River that comes down from the Llanganatis.       
  • Chonta Yaku: This beautiful place is located 1 hour away from the Santa Clara canton. It is a unique place because it has stones carved by its ancestors: also known as “petroglyphs".      
  • Via Puyo - Tena Tourist Trail: It has different places to share with family and friends, a few meters from the parish there is a tourist trail where you can camp, picnic and also has a booth where you can cook and do recreational activities with family and friends. On the side we can also observe a pool which gives a boost to the path and will allow you to bathe and refresh.       
  • Hola Vida Waterfall: This private wet tropical forest reserve is located on the road to Puyupungo, 30 minutes from the city of Puyo. Upon arrival at the reserve, you can take a 30-minute journey to the main waterfall of the reserve.         
  • Fátima Zoocriadero: This animal rescue center is located nine kilometers from the Puyo - Tena road. The Center has won several awards nationally and internationally for its dedicated and innovative conservation work. The zoocriadero of this project can be visited by tourists and scholars in the fields of zoology and ecology throughout the week.            
  • El Dique de Mera: The tigre river spa is located on the outskirts of Mera Canton in Pastaza. The city of Mera is only 15 minutes from the city of Puyo, on the road to Baños, Tungurahua. The local Municipality, through a tourist project, dammed the Tigre River that borders the city on an artificial dike and developed an adequate infrastructure to comfortably receive hundreds of tourists. The construction maintains a lot of harmony with the environment being a very spacious and pleasant place for family enjoyment.          
  • Las Orquideas Botanical Garden: This garden is a private project worthy of admiration. It was achieved by private initiative and without public funds, to regenerate and convert an area of almost sterile land of 7 hectares, into a beautiful Botanical Garden. This environmental regeneration work took about 18 years until the forest recovered again and the species of insects, reptiles, birds and even mammals returned to shelter in this space.     
  • Puyo River Tourist Walk: This walk has several attractions, such as several family cabins with facilities for camping and preparing food. Along the way, the Puyo River also accompanies the tourists' route, being able to choose several places to practice swimming or bird watching.       
  • Community Tourism in Cotococha: The community of Cotococha is located 30 minutes from the city, on the Puyo - Macas road, PuyuPungo sector. This is a community of Quichwa origin that has been integrated into a community tourism process with the aim of improving the quality of life of its members without losing their ancestral identity and culture.          
  • The Ethnic and Archaeological Museum of Puyo: If you are visiting the city of Puyo and want to get a global idea of what the Pastaza province can offer culturally, anthropologically, archeologically and faunistically, a visit to the Anthropological Museum of Puyo is the best decision.           
  • Parque Real - Exhibition of exotic birds: Its owner has managed to establish a sample of wild birds typical of the Amazon region and Ecuador, as well as exotic birds from various continents making the visitor in a short visit of about 40 minutes able to observe the 35 different species of birds. From Amazonian Loras to African ostriches and Asian chickens, etc.              
  • Route of the Shamans: This route is where the traditional medicine of the Amazonian native cultures is cared for. The route is marked with the reliable sites of professional shamans and their sacred botanical gardens. Route establishments have good references lived by national and foreign visitors and are respected in their local communities.      
  • Cave of the Tayos: A private cave located via Puyo - Macas, km 65. About two hours walking through the jungle. The cave can only be entered with a guide with safety equipment.  

Morona Santiago

  • Macas: Beautiful canton, cradle of multiple alternative tourist, cultural, sports and relaxation activities.      
  • Huamboya: Cultural, ancestral and gastronomic axis of the Amazon, with millenary traditions and ethnicities referring to world tourism. 
  • Palora: Eden of the Amazon, majestic and prominent region for family enjoyment and extreme sports.      
  • Cathedral of the Purísima de Macas  The first Sanctuary was not a great church, it was a cave worked on a mountain in 1591 and it was adapted to serve as a dwelling place for Mr. Juan de la Cruz. The modern cathedral was built years later by the collaboration of other places.         
  • Kutuku Protective Forest: The Cutucú-Shaimi protective forest is under study and management plan to be able to belong to SNAP.         
  • Sardinayacu lagoons: Lacustrine system of 5 lagoons, which are formed from the thaws of the Sangay volcano and other streams that will form the Volcán river .         
  • Panía Hot Springs: Located in natural pools 6 meters long by 2 meters wide and 40 centimeters deep.        
  • Arapicos Waterfalls: The Alto Arapicos waterfalls are located north on the border with the Morona canton in the upper Arapicos sector.        
  • Purisima de Macas Cathedral: The first Sanctuary was not a great church, it was a cave worked on a mountain in 1591.      
  • Shuar Community: This foundation consists of several authentic Shuar cabins built by the Bosco family belonging to the same ethnic group.          
  • Zamora Chinchipe
  • Pangui: Rich for its fertile land and its friendly people who welcome you to know their paradise.      
  • Yacuambí: Its inhabitants are friendly and charismatic, always ready to receive tourists in a good way, the population is dedicated to agriculture and livestock giving way to this canton being known as " The Ethnoecological Paradise of Ecuador "      
  • Yantzaza: Yantzaza is the main economic, commercial center, and the second most populous city in the province, its inhabitants are charismatic and friendly, happy to receive their tourists and make them feel at home, glad to be in this beautiful canton. Their celebrations take place throughout the month of February.      
  • Sentinel of the Condor: In this magical place you can enjoy waterfalls such as: La Yamala, Bridal Veil, Las Lianas, El Amor, El Pájaro, La Caverna, beaches such as: Cuje and Nanguipa, El Paraíso spa and El Tuntiak lagoon.                 
  • Tzanka ecological refuge: It constitutes a shelter for species, both animal and vegetable, in which with its guided tours, information is provided on the great variety of flora and fauna existing in the Amazon.      
  • Shuar Ethnic Monument: Represents a couple belonging to the Shuar ethnic group of the Ecuadorian East dressed in their typical costumes and at their feet elements referring to the food products of their use.          
  • Linear Park in Zamora Chinchipe: Site conducive to develop cultural activities such as: exhibitions, plays, music concerts.      
  • Central Park of Zamora Chinchipe: One of the most beautiful parks in Zamora and where the tallest private buildings under construction are located around it; and the main buildings of institutions such as La Catedral de Zamora, Technical Institute "San Francisco " and the Municipality of the Zamora canton.        
  • Zumba Museum: Property of Don Noé Bermeo. The pieces are invaluable, dating back thousands of years of the culture of the Bracamoros.    
  • Museum of the Baccalaureate School City of Loyola: Literary, anthropological museum, with archaeological pieces, a true contribution to the culture to the community.      
  • Path to the waterfalls "Salto de la gata" "and laughter": The waterfalls Salto de la Gata and La Risa are located in the Catacocha neighborhood, Pachicutza Parish, 9 km from the cantonal head of El Pangui.       
  • Waterfall "La Milagrosa": Tourists can bathe in it, at its sides we can find vines and small plants.    
  • Sabanilla: Considered as the gateway to the southern region of the Ecuadorian Amazon and one of the best Tourist Places in the Ecuadorian East. Sabanilla is the only entrance access to the province and the parish of Imbana through a horseshoe path.
