Puyo History

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Canelos Region was integrated into the territory of the Corregimiento de Ambato, jurisdiction established in 1797 within Quito Presidency, which at that time was part of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. In 1802 King Carlos IV of Spain issued the erection card of the Bishopric of Mainas, which was also to cover the Canelos Mission. This Identity Card, which was only ecclesiastical in nature, had, however, dire consequences in subsequent border disputes with Peru. On June 23, 1824, the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Republic of Colombia issued a Territorial Division Law that organized the territory of Gran Colombia into twelve departments. Each Department comprised provinces and cantons. The Pastaza area corresponded to the Macas canton of the Province of Chimborazo in Department No. 10 called Ecuador.

On March 27, 1897, by Law of the National Assembly, sanctioned by President Eloy Alfaro on April 14 of the same year, the "Eastern Region of Ecuador" was created and with this antecedent the same Eloy Alfaro in 1899, dictates the "Special Law of the East", giving the Region preferential treatment; but as in the previous Law, several Amazon territories continued to belong to the provinces of the Sierra. On this occasion the canton Canelos happened to belong to the province of Tungurahua. As noted in the preceding paragraphs, it is noted that the origin of what is now Pastaza, was born in Canelos, but as there was also a town called Infieles del Pastaza since 1775. Cinnamon rather, over time, was losing its quality of Province and Canton in the mists of the "Legend of the Cinnamon Country"; There is even talk that in Canelos, before the Foundation of Fr. Sebastián Rosero in 1624, there was an "old town" called MAUKALLAKTA.

The current city was founded on May 12, 1899 by Dominican missionary Álvaro Valladares and nine indigenous Canelos: Captain Palate or Eustaquio Illanes, Ignacio Vargas, Sebastián Illanes, Toribio Santi, and others; who, looking for a place of rest and rest between Baños and Canelos, found the appropriate place near the Puyo River, where today is the Central Park "May 12". Before this, the missionary ordered 3 large shacks to be built in the mentioned place, there they placed a wooden cross and celebrated a mass, entrusting the people to the Virgin Mary, who was baptized as Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii de Puyo. In the early years, the new town was inhabited by native Indians. Mestizo merchants used it as a rest on their trips between Baños and Canelos.
