In the province of Azuay is Chordeleg, a canton that has just joined the Network of Creative Cities of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Secretary of State said that no Ecuadorian should miss the privilege of going through Chordeleg, of meeting the artisans of this Azuayan canton, whom he encouraged to "continue making art and turning their ideas and talent into beautiful crafts, so that the Ministry promotes them and tourists come and buy them.

Chordeleg is known for its artisan tradition and creativity in pottery, goldsmithing, toquilla straw weaving and footwear. Last October it received Unesco recognition and is the second Ecuadorian city to obtain such a distinction in the category 'Popular Arts and Crafts'. On a global scale, it joins 64 other cities that also share this award.

  • The works of its artisans are recognized for their diversity and excellence. The city applied in the category 'Crafts and Popular Arts', activities that contribute with 66.20% (3,796 people) of the total (5,734 inhabitants) of the economically active population, mostly women.
  • The canton of Chordeleg, located in the province of Azuay and known for its artisan tradition and creativity in pottery, goldsmithing, toquilla straw weaving and footwear, is part of the Network of Creative Cities of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) 2017.
  • With this nomination it becomes the second Ecuadorian city to receive such a distinction in the category 'Popular Arts and Crafts', along with 64 other cities that also share this rank on a global scale.
  • The Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) maintains that the inclusion of Chordeleg in the Network will allow to manage the safeguard of the manifestations of the intangible cultural patrimony from a dynamic vision conjugating the traditional values with the necessary innovations and own of all cultural process.
