Church of the Purísima de Macas

The Sanctuary is located in the central park of Macas - Morona Santiago. The first Sanctuary was not a great church, it was a cave worked on a mountain in 1591 and it was adapted to serve as a dwelling place for Mr. Juan de la Cruz. Digging up part of its niches that have been found near the copal from which Macas and its regions supplied the entire Audiencia de Quito, this sanctuary was very close to the city of Sevilla de Oro discovered by Father Pedro Porras on 24 July 1986

The modern cathedral was built years later by the collaboration of other places.

The sanctuary has a single nave and its front part is composed of three levels, in the center there is an image of Christ of white color and six meters high, one of its most important elements are the stained glass windows, made in Cali, Colombia, which allow to visualize the history of the city of Macas and the history of the Virgin

Feasts of the Purísima de Macas

They represent the history of the transformation of the Purisima de Macas, venerated by the Catholics for two sworn feasts. On August 5 is celebrated with walks and pilgrimages made by their faithful followers, the other celebration takes place on February 18.
