Biblián, today is known in the Ecuadorian Austro, for the preparation of delicious cheeses, a tradition that has more than three centuries of experience. It is part of the Province of the Cañar.

The main river is the Burgay, born in Patococha, on the heights of the Galuay ; the utility that provides this river and its tributaries is imponderable: used to irrigate large tracts of land, situation improving agricultural production of the canton and also contributes to the production of electric power. This small piece of Ecuador, is known as the Green Canton of the Austro Ecuadorian. With hardworking and hospitable people, it is a place full of charm and history, which will be steeped in the memories of those who were born and love their people.

This canton, has many religious stories mention, among which stands out most, the virgin of the Dew. For the massive number of faithful every 8 September (date of the procession of the Virgin of the Dew), was built from 1894 a sanctuary highly acclaimed and known throughout the region, The Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Dew.

Sanctuary of the Virgin of El Rocio

  • It is located on steep hill of the Zhalao, located east of the city of Biblián in the province of Canar, place of worship and visited by thousands of believers from different parts of the country.

  • Verdeloma

  • Location:  To the north of the capital of the province of the Cañar in the Nudo de Caspicorral to the north, the gorge of Pillcomarca to the south, a branch of the Atar to the east and the Cordillera de Caucay, Rayoloma and Zhucay to the West.

  • Economic activity:  Its economy is based on agriculture, livestock, mining and crafts being the main activity in the life of the biblianense people; several women and men engaged in the manufacture of straw hats, one of the most developed work in the past.

Bibilán history

Biblián was dismembered in the canton Azogues when his Municipality was directed by Dr. Anibal Lopez Ochoa, who barely had possessed one June 30, 1944, he took him by surprise order Cantonización of Biblián, by the Committee Pro Cantonización, in the same date. Wednesday 26 July 1944, the commission appointed by the travels Committee to the city of Quito, in order to provide the office with the request of Cantonización and documents to Dr. José María Velasco Ibarra, President of Ecuador by that date .

You named a large commission, made up of citizen’s highlights of the people, who in 11 days were devoted to getting input from the community, in order to cover the costs of transportation and stay in the city of Quito, and also to cover expenditures required in management. Subsequently, the decree is made by the Minister of Government Carlos Guevara Moreno, a Monday July 31, will be approved and signed by the President on a Tuesday, 01 August 1944. Thus Biblián became the new canton the province of the Cañar.

Cantonización formalities are a true record in the Ecuadorian municipalismo, since no parish has earned this legal status in such a short time, only 17 days. It was a successful action for effectiveness and accountability of commissioners and mainly because of its strong management capacity. According to the story, in two days they were carried out all relevant procedures; Biblián representatives devoted entirely to fulfill the task entrusted by the public. At work the gratitude of the President and his Minister of Government to the people is demonstrated to the procedural order the immediate application, without reports and unhindered. Since that event, every August 1 Biblián, celebrated with joy and good citizenship anniversary of cantonización.
