Lago Agrio, as Nueva Loja was originally known, was nothing more than a hamlet inhabited only by a few missionaries, rubber tappers and indigenous people. This is because Lago Agrio was considered the farthest place in Ecuador, only accessible by plane or third order roads for which it took days to arrive from any urban area of Ecuador, but all this reality changed when an oil interest in the area was established in the 60s, from that moment the population growth was constantly accelerated until today. The economic interest motivated Ecuadorian settlers from other points to an accelerated migration, that is one of the reasons why the name of Lago Agrio changed over time, the residents report an important colony of distant people that arrived in the city and contributed in its development.
